Ceramics Classes 2026

8 week courses $250.00

Classes are held in the pottery studio complete with wheels and kilns. Advanced students can design and make whatever they wish and will be required to supply own equipment. Glazes and firings included but clay is extra (clay charged per bag). Most classes will cater for hand building and wheel throwing.

There is an existing waiting list to join classes, however please email your name, phone number and preferred class options to ceramics@hagas.com.au to join the waitlist. Apologies if we do not reply straight away as HAGAS membership and classes are managed by volunteers.

The class fee includes 8 x 2.5-hour classes. Term dates and class times are listed under class details. (You must attend the same class each week.)
You will have access to studio equipment, tools and glazes, with up to 5kg of glaze firing for your pieces – if your work exceeds 5kg, club firing rates will apply. Bisque and glaze firing is managed by the tutors. Membership is not included in the class fee, but is required to attend classes and open studio days. Please note, you cannot use class glazes, underglazes, class tools or bats on open studio days. Membership is currently $50 for the year payable in January. A reduced fee may be available if you join late in the year.
There are no makeup classes if you miss your class and we do not offer refunds.

Your class fee must be paid prior to attending classes and by the due date as advised by the Enrolments Team and in any case must be paid for the full term before the start of term.

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast

Yes, the classes cater for all levels from beginners to advanced students. The tutor is a “mentor” and moves around the class to help students at their own pace. We do not provide “structured” lessons.

The studio has designated storage shelves which are labelled for each class where work is kept while making your pieces. Greenware shelves are for work ready for bisque firing (these pieces are very fragile and we ask that you take care when placing your pieces on these shelves, and consider others by not handling their work). Once work has gone through the first firing (bisque) it is placed onto the bisque shelf; this work is now ready for glazing during class time. Glazed work is to be placed on the trolley in front of the bisque shelves ready for its final firing. Once pieces are complete they need to be taken home as there is no room to store completed pieces. Clay and other personal equipment (tools/towels etc.) are to be taken home each week.

  • Be considerate of others sharing the studio.
  • No bags, toolkits on the floor in walkways. This is an Occupational Health and Safety issue – closed footwear must also be worn.
  • Clean up after yourself. This includes tables, wheels, floor, sink area etc.
  • Allow 15 minutes clean up time at end of class.
All tools, sponges, brushes, containers, boards (bats) etc. are to be washed thoroughly and placed back in designated places.
  • Return all equipment, glazes, under glazes back into tutor cupboard.
  • Glazes, under glazes, class tools and class bats are for class use only and not available during studio hours.
  • We suggest that continuing students purchase own tools and bats for use in class.
  • Towel
  • An apron or shirt to protect your clothing (or wear clothes you don’t mind getting a bit dirty)
  • Visuals of any inspiration for pieces you wish to create

Members can attend open studio sessions for a small fee of $5 (subject to change depending on running costs). These sessions give members access to use club facilities, as well as an opportunity to come together to share ideas. Attendance at a ceramic open studio must be pre-booked with the Pottery Director. We encourage newcomers to join a class first to become familiar with our procedures.

We prefer all those who enter our building to be up to date with their Covid vaccinations and please do not enter the building if you have cold or flu symptoms, diarrhoea, any other Covid symptoms or have been in contact with someone who has. Wearing a mask is also strongly encouraged.

Email ceramics@hagas.com.au with the class time/s you are able to attend (you must attend the same class each week). If there is a place available in your requested class time you will be added to the class, if the class is full we will add you to our waitlist. Please be aware current students get first opportunity to re-enrol in classes, and with our waitlist being quite large, we cannot guarantee places becoming available. Once on our waitlist, we will contact you as soon as a place becomes available.

Unfortunately, it’s unlikely there will be more than 2 spots available in one class at a given time; a lot of students do continue and class numbers are limited because of equipment restrictions. If you have a group larger than 6 our Ceramics Director may be able to organise a workshop outside of term time for your group instead. If you have a group interested in participating in a workshop, please email us at ceramics@hagas.com.au for availability.
